How to Setup Hotspot Shield on Router?

Setting up a Hotspot Shield VPN on your router helps to encrypt data. The Hotspot Shield VPN is compatible with Netgear, TP-Link, and D-Link routers, which support DD-WRT and FreshTomato. The step-by-step instructions on how to setup Hotspot Shield on router like GL.iNet and Asus are provided here.

GL.iNet router:

Step 1

• On your computer, launch any internet browser and access the Hotspot Shield Premium account page.
• Sign in to your account using the correct login credentials.

Step 2

• Navigate to the Select Location drop-down menu, choose the virtual location that you want to use, and click the Download file button.
• Now, the config.ovpn file will be saved in the computer’s default folder.

Step 3

Log in to the Control Panel of the GL.iNet router using its IP address, username, and password.

Step 4

• Click the VPN option followed by the OpenVPN Client option in the left panel.
• Select the Add a New OpenVPN Configuration option in the main panel.

Step 5

• Click ‘Select a file or drag it here’ and choose the downloaded config.ovpn file.
• Fill the Description field with your location name.

• Return to the account page.
• Copy both the username and password.
• Paste the copied information in the User Name and Password fields.
• Click Submit -> Connect.

Asus (Asuswrt) router:

Step 1

• Access the Hotspot Shield account page and sign in to it using the correct credentials.
• Click the Select Location drop-down menu and select your virtual location.
• Once you click Download File, the config.ovpn file will be saved in the Downloads folder by default.

• Navigate to the OpenVPN tab.
• Type your virtual location name or any other name in the Description field.
• Go back to the Hotspot Shield account page and copy the VPN credentials.
• Return to the router’s web interface page and paste the copied VPN credentials in the User Name and Password fields.
• Navigate to the ‘Import.ovpn file’ field, click the Choose File button, and select the downloaded file.
• Click Upload -> OK.
